What is Minimalism?
I am not getting rid of everything I own and living in a monastery. I’m also not going to stop doing things that I enjoy. Both time and money will be spent in better ways.
This is a personal choice.
Minimalism means different things to different people. For me, it’s about living a simple life and not feeling the need to buy stuff to make me happy. It’s about focusing on what adds value and meaning to my life. It’s about experiences.
“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things that you didn’t do than by the ones you did so. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” – Mark Twain
The second bedroom in my apartment contains a history of stuff. It doesn’t hold the experiences that I’ve had though. Those are all in my head. And I don’t need to dust off a box and open it to see the memory. It’s there whenever I want or need it.
For me, minimalism means cutting the clutter in all aspects of my life. The clutter can be made up of objects, but it is also the distractions that steer me away from living a life with purpose. Clearing out the clutter leaves room for more happiness.
Removing stuff from my second bedroom is just a start. It will soon take over everything, and that’s a good thing.
